Story
Synopsis
Hello, Dolly!
begins early one summer morning in New York City in the year
1898. Dolly Levi, born Gallagher, the jack-of
all-trades widow of one Ephriam Levi, dry goods merchant is
on her way to Yonkers, New York, to arrange the second
marriage of Mr. Horace Vandergelder, the well-known half-a-millionaire
---- in truth she intends marrying him herself.
Meanwhile, in Yonkers, we meet Horace Vandergelder, his
long-suffering clerks, Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker,
and his weeping niece Ermengarde. Vandergelder, who
believes everyone inthe world, with the possible exception
of himself, is a fool, explains why he has decided to do
that most foolish thing marry again.
Dolly Arrives in Yonkers and proceeds to clear the field of
all rivals including Mrs. Irene Molloy, a young widow she
herself presented to Vandergelder, by telling him about a
great catch ----- an heiress ---- one Ernestina Money whom
she will introduce him to that very afternoon when he
marches in the 14th Street Association Parade.
Vandergelder agree and goes off to New York on business.
His two clerks, Cornelus and Barnaby, decide they've had
enough of Yonkers and are going to New York themselves to
get some living into them before it's to late. As they
sing about the wonders of the big city, they are joined by
Dolly who tries to persuade Ermengarde that it's she
rebelled too.
In New York again, we meet Mrs. Molloy, the young widow whom
Vandergelder has been considering as possible second
wife. She too is tried of her dull existence as a
milliner and longs for some adventure. By chance,
Cornelus and Barnaby take refuge in her shop to void meeting
Vanergelder and while the are hiding in cupboards and under
tables, Dolly, Mrs. Molloy and Minnie Fay ---- Mrs. Molloy's assistant
---- distract the suspicious Vandergelder. Despite
their best efforts, Vandergelder discovers that there are
men in the shop and is angry enough to break off relations
with Mrs. Molloy and informs Mrs. Levi that he will meet the
"heiress" that evening at the end of the
parade. Mrs. Molloy is furious and Dolly, seeing that
Cornelus is much taken with young widow, patches things up
and arranges for Cornelus and Barnaby to take Mrs. Molloy
and Minnie Fay to dinner at Harmonia Gardens restaurant.
As everyone goes off to the 14th Street parade, Dolly speaks
to her late husband and explains why she wants to marry Horace
Vandergelder.
The four young people arrive at the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant,
as does Mr. Vandergelder and his "heiress".
The place is buzzing. Dolly Levi is going to make her
first visit since the death of her husband.
By eight o'clock, the excitement has reached a fever pitch
as the figure of Dolly Levi appears at the main entrance,
resplendent in a glittering gown. Soon Dolly pulls all
stops in here attempts to hook Vanergelder. Confusion
results when Vandergelder discovers his clerks and his niece
Ermengarde in the Harmonia Gardens Show. He is taken
off to the Court for creating a disturbance. Dolly
tells him, that under the circumstances -----So Long Dearie."
Early the next morning back in Yonkers, Vandergelder ----
now without his clerks, his niece and without Dolly ----
realizes he's been a big fool and a bigger one yet, if he
lets Dolly Levi go. Dolly conveniently returns, having
expected such a turn of events, to forgive him and marry
him.
