Story
Synopsis
Fame ö The Musical is based on the Academy Award-winning movie and the highly successful TV Series of the same name. It is a comedy-drama in song and dance set in New York Cityâs legendary High School of Performing Arts. The story follows the lives of a group of young students and takes the audience through the highs, the lows, the romances and the ultimate triumphs of the star-struck pupils in their quest for success over a period of four years.
Conceived and developed by David De Silva, a native New Yorker with a background in education, Fame stems from De Silvaâs ãmagnetä school concept, which brings together students and staff with special interests. The basic idea was to follow a group of students (three actors, four dancers, and a couple of musicians) through four years of high school. The spice of the
story is in the mixing of rich, poor, black, white and Hispanic in his group of strongly motivated teenagers. While offering pure entertainment on one level, Fame is also
making a social statement about literacy, hard work, perseverance, and the importance of staying drug-free.
With lyrics by Jacques Levy and music by Steve
Margoshes, Fame features the hit song of the same name.
The movie version was released in 1980, receiving five Oscar nominations and winning two: Best Original Music Score (by michael Gore), and Best Original Song
(music by Michael Gore and lyrics by Dean Pitchford).
